Health and Wellbeing Board (HWPB)

The primary aim of the Health and Wellbeing Partnership Board is to improve the health of our population, particularly those facing disadvantage and the worst health outcomes.

There is a 9 year gap in life expectancy in Bristol (Henleaze has the highest life expectancy and Southmead the lowest). There is a strong connection between health and wealth: those who are well off are healthier and live longer than those who are not. Much of the board’s work is targeted at addressing these health inequalities so that all our residents can look forward to happier and healthier lives, for themselves and their families.

20:20 Plan Areas for Action
Bristol 20:20 Plan identifies 31 priority areas for action. Of these, the HWPB is responsible for the following:

· Health Improvement:
We know from recent surveys that most Bristol residents are in good health, are eating more fruit and vegetables than ever and are smoking less. However, we are taking less exercise and more of us report being overweight or obese. There is a strong link between inactivity, overweight and health problems like diabetes and heart disease. This is a trend that is set to continue unless we take urgent action.

· Adult Care:
A third of our over 65 cannot manage without some help and this population is set to rise. More than 50% of people over 65 have a disability or long term illness. Our strategy is to help people be more active, live longer in their own homes, and provide first class support services to meet specialist needs such as dementia or diabetes.

· Mental Health:
Many of us will face mental health issues at some point in our lives, either personally or through family members. We know that mental health is still difficult for many people to talk about and that there is much more that needs to be done to provide appropriate support, at work, in the community and via health services.

· Urban environment:
Where we live, what housing and transport options we have, where the local shops, schools and other services are – all of these affect how healthy we are. The way we plan and manage our environment will have a major impact on how healthy our families and communities are both now and into the future.
