"Sparkplugs" - Community Champions (applications closed until further notice)
Get Involved – its your City
We believe that people can achieve great things when they are given the opportunity and encouragement to do so. We also believe that local people often already know what’s needed to tackle the problems in their communities and change things for the better. These people we call ‘Sparkplugs’ - they’ve got energy and ideas and want to make a difference and get the job done. After all, it’s people that make things work – not systems or targets.
Often professional services struggle to connect with local residents or find it difficult to work in an effective way to bring ideas to fruition. The Connecting Communities Programme - a small-grants initiative – is a rapid way of starting and sustaining community-led projects that are proven to deliver results but in a way that lets local people lead the way. It differs in that projects should deliver results in 6 months, and that we look for the person first, and the idea second.
The Sparkplugs programme is dynamic, responsive and admin light. We don’t believe in a long drawn out grant application process, instead we create a panel of fund-holding investors (the Programme Board) to make connections with the Sparkplugs, all working together to produce better outcomes.

So...we are looking for energetic and motivated people...
who are interested in getting involved in helping decide how things get done in their area.
We will invite you to a half day training session to help you get started, put you in touch with your local Neighbourhood Partnership - if you aren't in touch with them already - and talk through whether you need some money to help you get started.
The project should be something you think you can get done in 3-6 months.
If you are interested, download the application form below and send it back to us.
Go on, get stuck in - after all, its your city.
P.S. This started in the USA, and has been successfully piloted in London and the South West Region. Have a look at this website

PLEASE NOTE: We are unable to pay salaries or professional fees - this fund is to be used to support volunteering activities, primarily individually based. Established groups can only be supported if they are helping local people to become Sparkplugs.
