Backing Young People in Bristol
into meaningful employment

As the current levels of unemployment rise, the challenges facing a young person in getting work experience, training and finding a job are increasing.

The Bristol Partnership is working with a number of local businesses, colleges, public and voluntary sectors to help young people in Bristol find meaningful workplace experience and positive pathways for the future.

How do we do this?  Apprenticeships. Local workplaces, education and government have signed up to give young people the chance to thrive, learn and contribute to our local economy.

Work experience is important in helping young people to develop the right skills for employment and to shape a career for themselves.  Prolonged periods without a job or training can have a negative impact on a person’s future work prospects as well as their wellbeing.

At a recent event held at the Bristol Zoo to relaunch the scheme and challenge to local business, Bristol City Council and City of Bristol College confirmed their ongoing support and signed on for this year's challenge.  Other local businesses pledging to provide opportunities for young people included:

  • Airbus
  • DAC Beachcroft
  • Gloucester County Cricket Club
  • The National Trust (Bristol Portfolio)
  • Knightstone Housing
  • Voscur
  • Elizabeth Shaw
  • Edwards Vacuum
  • Pattersons
  • Ambassador
  • Bristol Blue Glass
  • Creative Youth Network
  • Hays

Why not take a look at the opportunities for yourself:

Backing Young Bristol is a Bristol Partnership scheme addressing youth unemployment and giving young people opportunities to develop the right skills to find work.

In today’s challenging workplace, young people can be nurtured to develop practical skills in a variety of roles and industries. Our local businesses are key in helping them to develop both a knowledge base and experience to thrive in the workplace.

Over the next 12 months, this scheme hopes to:

  • Increase the number of new apprentices this year in the Bristol area to at least 2,012, and create a network of "apprenticeship champions" across the city to encourage employers to take on a young person
  • Match young people with opportunities for work experience and coaching to help them gain employment
  • Improve support and guidance to young people in particular areas of the city with high youth unemployment
  • Encourage the recruitment of local graduates
